SLA advance in Batticaloa

Sri Lankan Army units which advanced from Vavunathivu, 3 kilometers southwest of the Batticaloa town on the western shore of the lagoon into the ditrict's hinterland which is under the control of the Liberation Tigers returned to base this afternoon.

The troops had not advanced very far said army sources. The army units aided by cadres of the Razeek group had moved into Karaveddy, a village northwest of Vavunathivu.

The army also denied that troops had launched an operation along the Badulla road.
