Vehicle owners fear fuel shortage in Northeast

With the onset of war in Iraq, gas stations in Sri Lanka including Northeast are struggling to meet the increased demand for petrol and kerosine from residents who fear imminent shortage of fuel. Long lines were seen throughout the day at several stations which had supply of fuel, sources said.

Government of SriLanka has announced that there is sufficient quantity of fuel and emergenc items to last for at least three months.

However, "No fuel" signes have been posted in several gas stations in Jaffna. Sources said that black marketeers have been seen buying fuel in bulk in large storage containers.

Although the normal price of a litre of petrol is Rs 61.50, private businesses are selling the same quantity for Rs.100 sources said.
