Sri Lanka Army (SLA) stepped up checking pedestrians and vehicles at several key roads and junctions in Batticaloa district inconveniencing civilians and causing delays to vehicular traffic, sources in Batticaloa said.

Morning buses operating on the Batticaloa-Colombo road are stopped at Sathurukondaan and the passengers body searched, travellers complained.

At the checkpoint near the Kumburumoolai SLA camp, located 30km north of Batticaloa town, SLA soldiers routinely stop and examine the vehicles and record the details of the vehicles, sources said.

Lorries carrying cement and other construction materials are ordered to stay at the Kumburumoolai camp promises overnight and then escorted by Police personal to Batticaloa the following morning, vehicle owners complained.

Police sources said that these procedures are instituted to prevent construction materials from falling into Liberation Tigers' hands.
