Batticaloa Deminers to be given one month training

[TamilNet, Thursday, 16 October 2003, 15:40 GMT]
New deminers recruited recently for the Batticaloa district will be given one month training starting on October 25, said Ms. Teresa Tavares, the official in charge of demining in the district.

The Swiss International Development Agency (SIDA) is funding the demining project through the Tamils’ Rehabilitation Organization (TRO). Fifty persons have been selected for the training and they will demine at 37 zones in the district identified as mine-infested zones.

Depending on the risk posed by mines, the zones have been graded as dangerously high-risk, high-risk, middle-risk, low-risk. Initial focus of the demining will be on the four zones graded as dangerously high-risk, Ms. Tavares said.
