Land mine defused by SLA

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 04 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
A road clearing patrol of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) defused a land mine today at Korakallimadu, 6 km south of Valaichenai on the Batticaloa - Valaichenai road, said army sources in the east. It is believed that the land mine was placed in readiness for a large SLA convoy carrying troops from Batticaloa to Polonnaruwa.

The SLA road clearing party however managed to detect and defuse the mine before the convoy passed by said army sources.

Convoys pass this way every two or three days, taking troops to and from Polonnaruwa.

The mine is believed to have been placed by the Liberation Tigers, who seem to have obtained intelligence that a SLA convoy was due to pass Korakallimadu today, said army sources in Batticaloa.
