Jaffna journalists Monday refused to cover the visit of two senior Buddhist monks to the northern peninsula after a Sri Lanka army officer threatened to shoot Mr. Veluppillai Thavachelvam, a leading local correspondent for Sri Lankan and international Tamil media.
The unidentified SLA singled out Mr. Thavachelvam from a group of Jaffna journalists who were at the Palaly Sri Lanka Air Force base to cover the visit of the chief incumbents of the Asgiriya and Malwatte Buddhist orders Monday morning.
The Jaffna press was invited by Sri Lanka's Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees.
