A leading Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, Ven.Ellawala Methananda, slammed Norway Saturday for funding a program to teach English to Buddhist clergy.
The monk, addressing a press conference in Colombo Saturday, charged that the Norwegian program would undermine the Sangha -the Buddhist order in Sri Lanka.
"The Norwegian program is part of the Ranil Wickremesinghe government's program to develop Buddhist institutions. But this will subvert Buddism," Ven. Methananda said.
"Monks who were taken to Europe on scholarships came back sans their robes. Therefore these programs are designed to destroy Buddhism in this country," the monk charged.
