Sri Lanka changes stand on referendum

[TamilNet, Saturday, 11 October 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan government's cabinet met this morning to reach a final decision on the devolution package. It was decided at this special meeting that the proposed referendum in the east would not be held until conditions for holding it in the province return to normalcy.

The decision appears linked to objections raised last Sunday by the TULF and SLMC at a meeting with the Sri Lankan President that the situation in the east is not conducive at all for holding a fair referendum there.

The cabinet also decided on the date and mode of presenting its position on devolution to Parliament as an official document.
