Thamil Eelam sports festival begins in Kilinochchi

The third annual Thamil Eelam national sports festival commenced in Kilinochchi Friday, organizers said. Commander of the Eastern Front Forces of the Liberation Tigers, Col. Soosai, was the chief guest at the inauguration of the festival on the Kilinochchi playground Friday morning. Several senior officials of the LTTE, including the head of the Sports Division, Mr. S. Paappa were present at the inauguration, sources said.

Sports teams from all the districts in the northeast are taking part in the festival, which will be held until 27 February.

Organizers of the festival said many men and women’s teams will play traditional Tamil sports such as Kapadi and Thaachchi.

The Kilinochchi grounds will be floodlit during the nights for the games, a spokesman for the organizing committee said.
