Postal strike delays deliveries

[TamilNet, Thursday, 19 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
More than five hundred thousand foreign letters have accumulated in Colombo as result of a work to rule protest by Sri Lankan postal workers which began last Friday, March 13.

Negotiations between the government and the postal workers' union have failed.

Letters from abroad have accumulated as they have not been sorted for delivery until today said postal sources.

No moves were made either by the government or the postal union to reach a settlement today.

The postal workers began their protest campaign on seventeen demands.

They say that they had to begin this campaign because a work to rule protest by them earlier had not yielded any results.
