Girl sexually assaulted by EPDP cadre

[TamilNet, Saturday, 27 March 2004, 22:07 GMT]
The father of a twelve-year old girl student of Karampan Little Flower Girls' School Saturday made a complaint to the Kayts Police that his daughter had been sexually assaulted by a member of Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP). The girl's family is from Karampan south village in Kayts division, Police said.

According to the complaint the girl was dragged into the nearby shrub jungle when she was returning home from school by the suspect and was sexually assaulted, police said.

The Jaffna district political secretariat of the LTTE in a statement issued Saturday named the EPDP cadre who committed the offence as Thirupa.

Meanwhile residents of the village surrounded the Kayts Police Station and demanded immediate action against the offender.

In the meantime some senior members of the EPDP are alleged to have threatened the family of the girl to withdraw the complaint, civil sources said.
