Nurses threaten strike over demands[TamilNet, Tuesday, 24 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]More than thousand three hundred nurses working in Sri Lankan government hospitals demonstrated at the Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) in Colombo today threatening to go on strike from the March 30 if their demands are not met by the government. Sri Lanka's health sector could grind to a halt if the nurses begin their sick leave campaign said medical sources. The nurses union is led by Muruthettuwe Ananda Thera, a Buddhist monk. The demonstration was led by him.
