Army pulls back half kilometer

[TamilNet, Thursday, 26 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Reports from the forward areas of Operation Jayasikurui in the Vanni said that the Sri Lankan army had withdrawn half a kilometer from one of its positions near Mankulam.

The withdrawal was described as tactical.

The position from where the army had pulled back was not unidentified.

An article in the Tamil daily Veerakesari today speculated that the withdrawal has been made so as to enable troops of Operation Jayasikurui to advance north on either side of Mankulam to isolate and eventually capture the town.

However, army sources officially insisted that they are on the verge of capturing the strategic town.

They said that Mankulam is expected to fall in a couple of days.
