Norwegian doctors hold workshop in East Campus

Doctors from the Medical Faculty and Teaching Hospital in Tromsų, Norway, led by Tromsų University Planning Commissioner Mr.Eriksel, began a two day workshop on Medical education in the Nursing Education center at the Eastern University campus at 8.30 am Saturday, education officials said.

Professors and Medical experts from Jaffna Campus, Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and Eastern University participated in the workshop.

The workshop will continue on Sunday.

Registrar of Eastern Campus, A.D.Harris, said that the workshop will also explore ways in which the Tromsų Medical School and Hospital can collaborate with the Eastern University to facilitate improved availability of medical technology to people in the east.

The Tromsų University website said of its Medical Faculty: "Research at the Faculty of Medicine is many-faceted and has on many occasions been acclaimed both nationally and internationally. Outstanding examples are research into cardio-vascular epidemiology, cancer, environmental epidemiology in the Barents region and Arctic biology.

"Fundamental biological and biomedical studies are important fields of research, e.g. in different types of cancer, the human body's immunity system, pharmacology and the human body's reaction to medicines, microbiology and resistance to antibiotics, bio-technology/gene technology. In addition, the Faculty also concentrates on clinical research with an emphasis on improved diagnostics and the treatment of illnesses."
