Fire destroys computers worth Rs.4m at Hartley College

[TamilNet, Saturday, 08 May 2004, 18:10 GMT]
Computer center Hartley College, Point Pedro, a leading educational institution in the Jaffna district, housing computer equipment estimated to be worth nearly Rs.4 million was completely destroyed by fire Saturday, school officials said. The school is located inside the High Security Zone around the harbor area in Point Pedro.

College sources further said there were about 28 computers and three air conditioners in the room.

Education officials said the destruction of the computer room by fire had taken place early in the week and it came to light only on Saturday when one of the teachers opened the room found all computers and items destroyed, sources said.

Most of the computers had been donated by the education department and by old students of the college, sources said.

Although the cause for the fire has been attributed to faulty wiring, sources said that due to the location of the school within the HSZ arson cannot be ruled out.
