The salvage crew recovered the blackbox, or flight data recorder, of the ill-fated Mig-27 that plunged into the Negombo lagoon after taking off from Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday, according to media reports in Colombo.

According to Air Force media spokesman Group Captain Ajantha Silva, several pieces of the air-craft including large piece of tail-section have been recovered and the salvage operation is continuing, said reports.

Several Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) divers are participating in the operation.

MiG 27 was acquired by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in 2000 and is valued at nearly $5m.
