Tigers attack police patrol

Seven Sri Lankan Policemen were killed last night around 10.30 p.m. in Kalmunai in the Ampara district when suspected members of the Liberation Tigers lobbed two grenades into their jeep. Two policemen were wounded in the explosion.

The Police party which was on a routine night patrol had parked in front of the Taj Mahal theatre in the southern part of the town when the grenades were lobbed into their jeep said Police sources in Kalmunai this morning.

Kalmunai is a large Muslim - Tamil town on the east coast of Ampara and has been relatively free of major incidents since 'Eelam war III' began.
