Moonshine brewers warned

[TamilNet, Thursday, 30 April 1998, 23:59 GMT]
A group of six people men and women were given a strong caution by Mr. M Thirunavukarasu, Magistrate of Mallakam in Jaffna, for brewing kassippu (moonshine), said sources in Jaffna.

He reprimanded the offenders for "poisoning people to death" and said that if they appeared before the court on similar charges in the future, he would pass a sentence of rigorous imprisonment for the crime.

The brewing of moonshine has increased in the Jaffna peninsula following the presence of Sri Lanka Army (SLA)in the area.

Illegal breweries have become a lucrative cottage industry for villagers, who find a ready market for their brew among the SLA's troops in Jaffna.
