Workshop on school library development begins in Trinco

Three-day workshop for Principals on school library development in the northeast province began Sunday in Trincomalee Human Resources Development Centre. "In some schools in the province libraries are used as stores and staff rooms. This practice should be stopped. Principals must ensure that libraries are used by students to enhance their knowledge in addition to textbook education," said Mr.R.Thiakalingam, Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs and Sports inaugurating the workshop.

Mr.N.Anandaraj, Head of the Provincial School Library Development Unit made the introductory address.

He said his unit is taking steps to develop library facilities in about two thousand schools in the province. The workshop has been organized to develop awareness among principals of schools the urgent necessity to inculcate the reading habit among students in addition to their textbook learning.

Mr.V. Rasiah, Additional Provincial Director of Education said even teachers are not using library to enhance their knowledge outside the school curriculum. They should lead the students in developing the reading habit.

Mr.Kuruppu Arachchi, Director of Education in the Ministry of Education for School Library Development also spoke.
