SLA operation in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 19 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]
A group of Sri Lankan soldiers are reported to have advanced from their positions in Vallipuram around 9.30 a.m. this morning, into the Vadamaradchi East sector of the Jaffna peninsula, said sources in Jaffna. However no confrontations have been reported, they said.

The SLA troops advanced towards Kudaththanai, Manatkaadu, Potpathy, Vilankaadu, said sources.

A group of nearly 300 SLA soldiers made a similar advance on May 2 and returned to their positions in Vallipuram the next day.

The Vadamaradchi East region is not controlled by the SLA.

Meanwhile, one soldier of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) was seriously wounded when a group of Liberation Tigers fired at soldiers at Maiylankarachcai, 32 km north of Batticaloa, near Vakarai, said sources in Valaichenai.

The group of Tigers are believed to have come from the Vakarai, which is under Tiger control. The wounded soldier was removed to Polannaruwa base hospital.
