Four soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) were wounded, three of them critically, when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) opened fire at Vavunaathivu SLA camp, 6 km west of Batticaloa, around 12:00 midnight on Monday, said sources in Batticaloa.
The LTTE fired a mortar and opened fire with small arms at the camp, which lies on the border of areas controlled by the LTTE and SLA.
The SLA kept on firing mortars and automatic weapons for about another hour afterwards, said sorces.
SLA sources said they believed that the LTTE too would have suffered casualties. But there was no independent confirmation of this.
