UPFA Chief Minister for Western Provincial Council

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 22 June 2005, 18:11 GMT]
Mr.Nandana Mendis of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Wednesday evening was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council (WPC) before the Provincial Governor Mr.Alavi Mowlana. He was appointed following the resignation of Mr.Reginald Cooray from the Chief Minister post, sources said.

Mr. Mowlana, Wednesday met with leaders of all political parties represented in the WPC separately to assess the support each party had in the council and determined that the UPFA could prove its majority in the council.

Hence he named Mr Nandana Mendis as the new Chief Minister, sources said.

Mr. Reginald Cooray who is also from the UPFA resigned from the Chief Minister post Monday when the no-confidence motion sponsored by the United National Party (UNP) was to be taken up on the same day against him with the support of JVP.

His resignation rendered the motion ineffective.
