STF soldier, policeman, homeguard injured in Akkaraipattu

An STF soldier, a policeman and a homeguard were seriously injured at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when unidentified attackers lobbed a grenade into their checkpost located on RKM Road in Akkaraipattu, 64 km. south of Batticaloa, Police said. The injured men were rushed to Akkaraipattu Hospital and later transferred to Amparai Hospital. Tension prevails in Akkaraipattu following the attack.

STF soldiers returned fire on the attackers. Continuous firing was heard for 5 minutes, residents said.

Five lankan security personnel were stationed in the sentry post adjoining a tsunami refugee camp at Tharmasangari playgrounds, one kilometer from Akkaraipattu town.

The injured men were STF soldier Mr. Ratnayakka, homeguard Mr. Ramesh and policeman Mr. Abdullah, according to hospital sources.

Three STF soldiers were injured in a previous grenade attack on the same checkpost on July 21.
