Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a 45-years old man, a father of a paramilitary cadre from the Karuna Group, at his house in Kudapokkuna in Polannaruwa district, Welikanda Police said. The victim's wife was injured in the incident that took place Sunday around 9:00 p.m. Police said that the gunmen were targeting the cadre who had left the paramilitary group a few months ago.

The dead man was identified as Mr. Kandiah Ponnurasa.

His son was discharged from the paramilitary Karuna Group a few months ago, Weilkanda police said.

Ponnurasa's wife, K. Leelawathy, injured in grenade explosion, was admitted at Polannaruwa Hospital, sources added.

Sri Lanka Army sources said that the ex-paramilitary cadre lobbed grenade at the gunmen following the attack. But, police sources said that the grenade was thrown by the attackers.

Kudapokkuna, a border-village between Batticaloa and Polannaruwa districts, is located 15 km north of Welikanda and 70 km west of Batticaloa.
