Contrary to an earlier announcement, the Jaffna University team will participate in the inter-University Sports meet which is scheduled to be held at the Ruhuna University in the southern province later this year, said Jaffna University officials.
Earlier the Dean of the Jaffna University Arts Faculty, Prof. A. Shanmugathas, said that the Jaffna University team could not participate in the sports meet due to financial difficulties.
Prof. A. Shanmugathas, said that the earlier decision was taken on recommendations by the University Finance Committee that there weren't enough funds to send the Jaffna University team to Ruhuna.
The "mini-Olympices" are held every four years.
Meanwhile, over 200 school students from Jaffna who are planning to take part in an inter-school competition among schools in the north-eastern province, to be held in Trincomalee and arranged in view of Tamil Day, may not be able to participate as there is currently no boat service between Jaffna and Trincomalee, said sources in Jaffna.
A welfare organisation of the Jaffna Hindu College has brought this matter to the Sri Lankan president urging her to make arrangements for the students to travel to Trincomalee, the sources added.
The competitions are scheduled to begin on June 18.
The Organisation has said that the Education Ministry of the North-Eastern provincial council has not made any arrangements for the school children to travel to Trincomalee.
