Four SLA soldiers injured in grenade attacks in Chavakachcheri

Four Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were injured in two separate grenade attacks on a SLA camp in the northern town of Chavakachcheri, Friday afternoon. The SLA soldiers have set up road blocks in the area and are conducting a house-to-house search, sources said.

Two soldiers were injured in the first attack when unidentified persons lobbed a grenade on the SLA camp, located in front of the Chavakachcheri Divisional Secretariat, around 1.30 p.m, police said.

At 3.30 p.m two more SLA soldier were injured in the second attack on the camp, according to the police.

All four soldiers have been air-lifted to Palaly military hospital and receiving treatment, sources said.

When SLA soldiers attempted to remove road blocks near Meesalai at 5.30 p.m. youths and village residents confronted the soldiers hurling stones. Thurairajah Kubendran (24) was severely injured when SLA soldiers fired at the protesters. Kubendran has been admitted to the Jaffna Hospital, sources said.

Tension prevails in Chavakachcheri town, and all roads leading to Chavakachcheri town are deserted, sources said.
