New Jaffna Mayor takes office

Mr. Pon. Sivapalan, legal advisor to the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), was sworn in as the new Mayor of the Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) in a ceremony attended by the party's Vice President, Mr. V. Anandasangari, today in Jaffna.

Mr. Sivapalan's appointment follows the killing of the former Mayor, Mrs. V. Yogeswaran on May 17.

Following the shooting, six Jaffna Municipal Council members have resigned their positions.

Six new councillors who were nominated to the JMC were also present at the swearing in ceremony which was held at the Hindu Wedding Hall in Nallur today.
