TULF ranks back self determination

[TamilNet, Sunday, 26 October 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Batticaloa district branch of the TULF passed a unanimous resolution this morning that any solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka should recognise the Tamil people's right to self determination.

The branch met this morning to discuss the current political situation in the north-east in relation to the PA's package being presented to Parliament on Friday Oct. 24.

The three TULF MPs for Batticaloa and senior politburo member of the TULF Mr. Alphonse Mary were also present at the meeting. Mr.Joseph Pararjasingham MP presided.

The branch also passed the following resolutions unanimously.

1. The borders of the unified northern and eastern provinces as they existed at the time of Ceylon's independence from Britain should be the basis for the unit of devolution - and no process to divide it should be accepted.

2. Any solution should be discussed with the LTTE and should be accepted by it.

The TULF's powerful Batticaloa branch also unanimously decided to strongly condemn President Chandrika and the PA regime for referring to the Liberation Tigers as terrorists.

The resolutions were faxed to the TULF leadership in Colombo today. The branch members were highly critical of the manner in which Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam is promoting the PA's package.

The TULF politburo has eleven members. Of this four are from the Batticaloa branch.
