Forced labourer commits suicide

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 07 July 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Muththuthamby Thangavelu (42), of Palai, 35 km southeast of Jaffna, committed suicide by hanging, because he was unable to withstand the harsh treatment he received from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) during forced labour, said sources in Jaffna.

Thangavelu, one of the workers regularly used by the SLA for forced labour, had hanged himself from a margosa tree in his garden.

On the days they are used for forced labour, labourers are beaten regularly and almost never given food.

In the East, the SLA is known to force villagers surrounding its camps to do menial tasks, such as cleaning toilets, within the camps.
