Unidentified gunmen shot and injured a Tamil youth Friday noon in the village Kanniya located above seven km northwest of Trincomalee. The wounded youth, Suthakar, was admitted to the Trincomalee general hospital with gunshot injuries in his shoulder, Police said. Kanniya village comes under the Uppuveli Police division in the Trincomalee district.

The injured youth is a resident of Sivapuram, a village in the Seruvila division, down south of the district. Officials of a NGO who were traveling through the area where the incident took place had transported the injured to the hospital, medical sources said.

Officials of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in the east port town visited the scene.

Later they went to the hospital and talked to the injured youth, medical sources added.

The Uppuveli Police began inquiries into the incident.
