Tamil, Muslim candidates elected to Trincomalee UC

No Sinhalese has been elected a member to the Trincomalee Urban Council in the election held Thursday. The newly elected council, which is to start functioning from April 15, will have twelve members- 10 from the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) and 2 from the Independent Group. Of the twelve members nine are Tamil members and three are Muslims. The ITAK fielded fourteen Tamils and two Muslims for the Trincomalee UC. Out of them nine Tamils and a Muslim got elected on preferential votes.

The independent group that fielded candidates consisted of five members from the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), four from the United National Party (UNP), 2 from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and five from the North East Sinhala Organization (NESO) polled 4286 votes against 16,368 votes polled by ITAK and qualified for two members to the newly elected council.

The two members are Muslims- Mr. Sultan Farook of UPFA polled 1650 preferential votes and Mr. Noor Mohamed of UNP polled 1286 preferential votes. Sinhalese and other Muslim candidates in the list received preferential votes less than thousand, sources said.

Following ten candidates of the ITAK list to the Trincomalee UC have been elected on preferential votes: -

  3. Kandiah Thurairasa (5400)
  4. Jeganathan Pulendraraj (5027)
  5. Perumal Muniayandy (2717)
  6. Sithiravelu Arudchelvam (2237)
  7. Thandayuthapani Karikalan (2099)
  8. Ratnasabapathy Navaratnarajah Varathan (1926)
  9. Abdul Hussein Sahul Hameed (1516)
  10. Ms Kanmany Amma Ratnavadivel (1294).


The results of the Trinco UC election follow: -
ITAK- 16368-10 seats
Ind. Group- 4286-2 seats
JVP- 895
EPDP-259

JVP and EPDP were disqualified for the counting of seats when both parties failed to secure 1/5 of the total number of votes polled. Hence seats were allocated to the ITAK and Independent Group, sources said.
