Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has barred Karainagar fishermen from carrying out their trade forcing more than 250 fisher families to struggle to make a living, sources said. Karainagar, Uriyan area Fisheries Union has registered a complaint with the Jaffna Human Rights Commission of their plight, civil society sources in Jaffna said.
SLN soldiers had attacked fishermen returning from sea on the 3rd May saying that they heard gun shots in the area. After this incident SLN had refused to allow fishing in the Karainagar seas.
More than 150 families from Palavodai and 100 families from Uriyan are affected by this ban, Fisheries Union officials said.
