UNP-backed group wins Colombo Municipal Council

United National Party (UNP) contesting under the symbol of eye-glasses as an Independence group obtained the majority in the Colombo Municipal Council election obtaining 23 seats polling 82,850 votes, election office announced. The polling concluded at 4:00 p.m., Saturday.

United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) obtained 14 seats (57,158 votes), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 4 seates (17,480 votes), and Western Peoples Front (UPFA) obtained 4 seats (16,068 votes).

Democratic Freedom Front, Upcountry Peoples Front, Independence Group-2, and JHU obtained a single seat each.
