Civilian shot, injured in Jaffna

Unknown gunmen shot and seriously injured a civilian in Navaly North, Aanaikottai area in Valigamam, Jaffna district at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, civil sources in Jaffna said. The gunmen requested Ilayathamby Vanniyasingam, 46, to come out of his house and fired at him at close range, sources added.

Vanniyasingam has been admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital with serious gunshot wounds in his upper body, hospital sources said.

The shooting incident taking place close to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp in Aaniakottai, amidst increased SLA harassment of area residents has terrified local residents, civil sources said.

Motivations for targetting Vanniyasingham are not known.
