Police constable shot dead in Pesalai

Unidentified men shot and killed a police constable when he was returning from a shop to report for duty at a sentry point located in the heart of Pesalai town Wednesday evening around 4:00 p.m., police sources in Mannar said. The dead constable was identifed as S.M.Mahinda, 41, of Minuwangoda. The Police fired back but no one was injured.
The body of the policeman was handed over to Mannar Police.
Residents of Pesalai fled from their houses and sought refuge in the Church of Our Lady of Victory.
Pesalai town became deserted as all shops were shut down and traffic came to a halt, civil sources said.
