3 youths killed, another injured in Vavuniya

Three youths were killed and another injured when armed men stopped the auto-rikshaw in when they were travelling in and opened fire. The incident occured at Samalankulam in Vavuniya, around 1 p.m., Saturday, police said.

Two youths died on the spot while the other died while being transported to Vavuniya hospital by local residents, according to the police.

The three who were killed in the shooting were identified as Vaithilingam Mahenthiran, Nadarasa Navarasa and Navaneethan.

The injured youth, Roopan, was taken to Vavuniya hospital and later transfered to Anuradhapura hospital, the police said.

Vavuniya District Judge, Mr.Manikavasagar Ilancheliyan visited the site along with OIC of the Vavuniya police.

The judge ordered the police to conduct further investigations.

Mother of one of the victim told the judge that her son was in dispute with a Tamil paramilitray group in Vavuniya.

Police recovered empty bullet casings of AK-47 assault rifle from the site.
