The Sri Lankan Police at Paliyagoda, a suburb of Colombo north, arrested four SLA personnel yesterday who were attempting to sell ancient Tamil religious idols to an antique dealer.
A Police team led by chief inspector Priyantha Jayakkody raided a guest house where an SLA Major, 2 Lance Corporals and a sargent were engaged in negotiations with a dealer to sell the medieval metal sculptures of Pillaiyar for eight hundred thousand Sri Lankan rupees.
Police sources said that the army personnel may have stolen the idols from abandoned Hindu temples in the Vanni.
They said that the Pillaiyar sculptures were made of Aimpon, an alloy made of five metals, including gold.
