UNP demands inquiry into Vaharai killings

[TamilNet, Thursday, 09 November 2006, 02:46 GMT]
Mr.Tissa Attanayake, General Secretary of the UNP, the main opposition United National Party (UNP), in a statement released in Colombo Thursday, condemned the killing of civilians in Vaharai division in Batticaloa district and called on the government to hold immediate proper inquiry into this tragedy, sources said.

The UNP last month signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), main constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government on identified issues giving top priority to solve the ethnic conflict.

Several Tamil internally displaced people (IDP) including men, women, children and babies were killed and injured in the artillery fire launched by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on two schools where IDPs are sheltered, sources said.
