Asylum seekers tortured

[TamilNet, Friday, 18 September 1998, 18:39 GMT]
Four Sri Lankan Tamil youth have alleged they were tortured and abused by the French immigration authorities.

They took their case to a Tamil human rights lawyer in Colombo, Ms. Maheswari Veylautham, today. In affidavits sworn before her, they have said that the French Police and immigration had taped their mouths and had harshly abused them physically.

The four, one girl and three boys, had entered France on Sept.1 and were deported to Sri Lanka on Sept. 12. The Sri Lankan immigration had released them the same day after a very brief inquiry they said.

Their lawyer is expected to take up the matter with Amnesty International and other international human rights organisations said an associate of the lawyer.
