Policeman killed, one seriously injured in Vavuniya

Unidentified armed men opened fire Friday around 10:45 a.m at Sector 3, Thalikulam on Mannar road in Vavuniya on policemen staying in a temporary camp, killing one policeman on the spot and seriously injuring another, Officer-in-charge of Vavuniya police, Kumara Chanthanayake said. The injured policeman was rushed to Vavuniya hospital and later transferred to Anuradapura hospital for further treatment.

The attackers shot with pistols targeting the policemen in the camp.

Residents said heavy gunfire was heard from the site as police clashed with the attackers.

Meanwhile, two policemen were injured in a mortar attack Thursday around 10:30 p.m on Chalampaikulam on Mannar road, seriously injuring two policemen, Vavuniya police said.

The injured policemen were immediately rushed to Vavuniya hospital and then taken to Anuradapura hospital for additional treatment.
