JUSU requests assurance of students' safety

Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) in a statement to media Tuesday, made an urgent request to the authorities and to the international community to ensure the safety of students of Jaffna district, and to create a safe, free and conducive atmosphere for educational activities in Jaffna district, sources in Jaffna said. The statement also urged the authorities to take steps to investigate the whereabouts of those who had been abducted and found missing. "Until these requests are fulfilled, the student community of the peninsula will boycott all educational activities will begin a widespread agitation campaign from Wednesday," the statement further said.

Meanwhile, all administrative activities in the Jaffna University, came to a halt Tuesday as all its administrative and tutorial staff abstained from duties in protest against the abduction of undergradute student Niruparaj, and violence against students.

The JUSU pointed out that one undergraduate, two technical college students, and five secondary school students have been killed since August 11 in addition to the abduction, disappearance of many other students.

Jaffna University premises stood empty Tuesday, except for the presence of its Vice Chancellor and the watchers as the rest of the staff boycotted work in protest against the abduction of A. Niruparaj on January 3, the sources added.
