Court orders release of arrested refugees

Twenty-four Sri Lankan Tamils refugees, including men, women and children, who were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) when they were returning from Tamilnadu were produced in Mannar magistrate's court Saturday morning. Additional Magistrate Mr.T.J.Pirapaharan ordered them to be released.

These Tamils were among several hundreds fled from Mannar and sought refuge in Tamilnadu June last year.

The Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) arrested these Sri Lankan Tamils Friday early morning when they landed at Nadukuda shore.

They told court that they decided to return to Mannar as they had been suffering in welfare centers located Thirunelveli and Thindukkal in Tamilnadu due to acute financial crisis and from diseases.

The SLN handed these refugees to Talaimannar Police on Friday evening.
