Man shot dead in Nelliady

A 43-year old man was shot dead by unknown gunmen in front of Nelliady Madhya Maha Vidyalayam along Nelliady-Vathiri road in Vadamaradchy at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, sources in Point Pedro said. Gunmen brought the victim in a motor-bike to the area, and shot him dead at point blank range before escaping. Unconfirmed reports said that the victim was an intelligence operative working with the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

The victim was identified from the documents found in his body as Muniyandi Selvanayagam, from Belmadulla area in Ratnapura.

The body has been transferred to the Manthikai Government Hospital for postmortem examinations, hospital sources said.

Details of why the victim, from Hill country, was in Vadamaradchy are not known.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers cordoned off areas surrounding the crime site and conducted search operations. No one was arrested, according to local residents.
