Indian fisherman fast in protest

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 07 October 1998, 22:49 GMT]
Five Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in the high seas off northern Sri Lanka early this year began a protest fast in prison today demanding their release and repatriation to Tamil Nadu. The fishermen are from Rameswaram on the south Indian coast.

The Tamil fishermen said that they were being unreasonably held by the Sri Lankan authorities.

They have been in prison for more than eight months, according to prison officials.

The fishermen lashed out at the Indian High Commission in Colombo for callously ignoring their plight.

The men said that they will continue their protest until the Sri Lankan authorities address their problem.
