Forty-eight Tamil refugees, belonging to 15 families, were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) Thursday night when they attempted to cross over to India to seek refuge there said aid workers.

The refugees were handed over to the Mannar Police on Friday morning, they said.

The police produced them in the Mannar courts the same day and the judge ordered the police to hand them over to the civil administration officers.

The refugees are now living in Pesalai welfare centre in Mannar.
