[TamilNet, Thursday, 05 April 2007, 12:27 GMT]
Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers opened fire on two farmers travelling on a tractor to work in paddy fields, Thursday around 11:00 a.m, at Ottuveli area located behind Valaichenai Paper Factory in Batticaloa district, seriously injuring one of them, sources in Valaichenai said.

The injured farmer, Abubucker Anees, 30, of School Road, Meeravodai, Valaichenai was rushed to Valaichenai hospital first and later transferred to Batticaloa Teaching hospital for further treatment.

Valaichenai police claimed that Karuna paramilitary group members have been exchanging fire with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Thursday morning at the said place, and when the farmers happened to pass by later, were shot at by armed men waiting in ambush.

However, local residents in the area said that the SLA troopers shot and injured the farmer.

Farmers going to work in paddy fields rushed back home following the shooting.

Valaichenai is located 27 km north of Batticaloa town.
