Six Tamil civilians were arrested in a cordon and search operation conducted in Kandy town in the central province Thursday night by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and police. Five of the arrested are natives of Jaffna district and one person is from upcountry, police said.

Police said they were taken into custody as they failed to prove their identity with valid documents. They also failed to give reason for their stay in Kandy during the preliminary investigation.

All the six civilians are being detained in Kandy police station and are being subjected to interrogation.
