Sri Lanka's Minister opposes DC system

[TamilNet, Monday, 07 May 2007, 10:40 GMT]
"The proposed District Council (DC) system by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) would not help to solve the ethnic conflict. The quazi-federal constitution now in force in India would be ideal to find a lasting political solution to the conflict," Mr.Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, a senior minister and the chief whip of the SLFP in parliament told media persons.

SLFP is the main constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government.

"I did not attend the SLFP central committee meeting which decided in favour of DC system because President Mahinda Rajapakse had sent me to Jaffna on that day. I would have opposed that decision if I were present at the meeting. I have now decided to tell Mr.Rajapakse that the Indian model is suitable for our country," Mr.Fernandopulle further said.
