Minister charges UNP-LTTE conspiracy

Gen.Anuruddha Ratwatte, Sri Lanka's deputy minister for defence, charged that the opposition leader Mr.Ranil Wickremesinghe was in cahoots with the Liberation Tigers.

The minister, addressing a public meeting in Matale, 142 kilometers northwest of Colombo, last night said that the UNP leader is telling the people that the Liberation Tigers will soon recapture the Jaffna peninsula.

Gen. Ratwatte said that the Liberation Tigers know that they can never take Jaffna and are therefore spreading the story that they will soon bring Jaffna under their control to carry on a psychological warfare against the army and people.

Gen.Ratwatte told the audience that Mr.Wickremesinghe has resorted to a conspiracy with the leader of the Liberation Tigers Mr.Veluppillai Prabhaharan, knowing well that he (Mr.Wickremesinghe) has no political future.
