Tiran Alles remanded

Mr.Tiran Alles, publisher of Sinhala weekly Mawbima, who was arrested by the Terrorist Intelligence Unit of the Police on Wednesday evening around 5.45 p.m. in a private hospital in Colombo has been remanded till June 13. Colombo Chief Magistrate Sarojini Kusala Weerawardene ordered remand Wednesday night on an application by the police, legal sources said.

Chief Magistrate Wednesday night went to the hospital where the suspect was warded, and the suspect was produced before her.

The police recorded a statement from the suspect soon after his arrest.

Defence Counsel Mr.Shanaka Abeynayake requested the court to release the suspect on bail. But the court based on the objection by the police, refused bail, legal sources said.

However, the Chief Magistrate said she would consider the bail application on the next date.

On Wednesday, 30 May, Tiran Alles gave a written statement to the three officers who had come to make the arrest, IPs Prasanna Alwis, Abeysinghe and Sub Inspector Wijeratne at Nawaloka Hospital, the details of the leaders of the ruling Government and Tiran Alles's involvement in the alleged deal with the LTTE, Sunday Leader reported.
